School social services are a special education related service and are IEP driven. School social work involves preparation of a social/developmental history of a child, counseling with a child and family, participation in developing behavioral intervention strategies, and integration of school and community resources. School social workers assist students when social, emotional, and/or behavioral problems are impacting a child's ability to gain access to the general education setting, and when a child is not making academic process due to social/emotional and/or behavioral defecits. School social workers are district resources, and are assigned to schools based on need as identified through the special education department.
